This article explains how RaiseNow dunning works for subscriptions, which retry rules are available, and how subscriptions are handled when charges repeatedly fail.
Overview
RaiseNow dunning helps manage failed subscription payments automatically. If a charge attempt fails, the system retries the payment several times before eventually cancelling the subscription after a defined number of failed invoices.
This process helps:
Recover payments that fail temporarily
Reduce manual follow-up for failed charges
Ensure subscriptions are handled consistently and transparently
Dunning applies only to subscriptions.
How dunning works
For each subscription, RaiseNow follows this process:
On the subscription’s due date, a new invoice is created.
The system attempts to charge the invoice.
-
If the charge fails, automatic retries are triggered on:
Day 2
Day 4
Day 6 after the due date
-
If all retries fail:
The invoice is cancelled
A new invoice is created at the next billing interval
-
If a defined number of consecutive invoices fail, the subscription is cancelled automatically.
Dunning rules
RaiseNow offers two predefined dunning settings. One of these is applied per organisation.
Option 1: Cancel after 3 failed invoices (default)
Retries per invoice: 3
Subscription cancelled after: 3 failed invoices
Example (monthly subscription):
Month 1:
Charge attempt on due date, retries on days 2, 4, and 6 → invoice cancelled if unpaidMonth 2:
Same retry process → invoice cancelled if unpaid-
Month 3:
Same retry process → subscription cancelled if unpaid
Option 2: Cancel after 5 failed invoices
Retries per invoice: 3
Subscription cancelled after: 5 failed invoices
Example (monthly subscription):
Months 1–4:
Charge attempt on due date, retries on days 2, 4, and 6 → invoice cancelled if unpaidMonth 5:
Same retry process → subscription cancelled if unpaid
|
Important: Because each invoice includes multiple retry attempts, the number of failed payments shown in reports may increase. This behaviour is expected and indicates that the retry process is active. |
